The Araucaria, better known as Norfolk Pine, is a ravishing conifer from the Pacific tropical forests. Part of the Araucariaceae family, it gets its nickname from the island of Norfolk where it is found.

In its natural habitat, the Araucaria can reach the height of a mature tree. Indoors, it will obviously remain shorter. Its growth will not produce more than a ring of branches per year. Its resinous spines are soft green and its growth upright. It is obviously just as splendid to have at home or at the office as a classic Christmas tree!

MAINTENANCE

The Araucaria will be happy indoors if placed in a very bright indirect light setting. Just as any other conifer, it will appreciate being misted regularly to avoid its needles from drying up. As for watering, make sure that the soil remains slightly moist at all times.

When you take possession of your plant, make sure you assess its watering needs. Before you give it a drink the first time, check the soil’s moisture level to verify whether or not it is moist near the surface. It is best to aerate the soil before the initial watering since it is often compacted to avoid shifting during transit. This also allows it to breathe and release moisture.

Rotate your plant periodically in order to encourage an even growth. Cleaning the leaves regularly will stimulate proper photosynthesis. As you clean the foliage, inspect the spines to make sure there are no pests.
