The Rubber Tree (Ficus elastica), native to Southern Asia, is a plant easy to care for. In India, its buttressing roots have been trained to grow into living bridges over rivers. Watching it evolve is quite interesting.

The Ficus elastica appreciates a humid environment, so avoid placing it near any type of air vent. It prefers good indirect light. Though it may tolerate medium light, its burgundy foliage may become paler if not exposed to sufficient ambient light.

MAINTENANCE

The Rubber Tree requires a bit less care than other Ficus species. Its soil doesn’t appreciate being moist at all, so allow it to dry up at least at half pot between waterings. Yellowing and dropping leaves are a sign of overwatering. Older leaves may also turn yellow in time. So check the soil’s moisture level before you reach any conclusion and adjust your watering. It may also react to a change in location.

When you take possession of your plant, make sure you assess its watering needs. Before you give it a drink the first time, check the soil’s moisture level to verify whether or not it is moist near the surface. It is best to aerate the soil before the initial watering since it is often compacted to avoid shifting during transit. This also allows it to breathe and release moisture.

Rotate your plant periodically in order to encourage an even growth. Cleaning the leaves regularly will stimulate proper photosynthesis. As you wipe the foliage, inspect the leaves on either side to make sure there are no pests.
