The Ficus Lyrata, commonly called Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree, is a stunning plant with enormous leaves increasingly popular among indoor plant lovers. Its visual impact is incomparable when given the right care and placement.

The Ficus lyrata enjoys a hot and humid environment, plenty of water and very good ambient light. It will thrive being placed near a window, but it is best to keep it away from direct sunlight if set in southern or western exposition. Choose a location away from any air vents. Do not worry if your Ficus looses a few leaves upon its arrival, it may sometimes take a little while for it to adjust to its new home.

MAINTENANCE

Give your Ficus a drink when the top third of its soil is dry, for it may loose leaves when it dries up too much. Check the moisture level regularly in order to establish a routine based on the season. Too much water may also lead to root rot. In that case, it may drop some leaves as well.

When you take possession of your plant, make sure you assess its watering needs. Before you give it a drink the first time, check the soil’s moisture level to verify whether or not it is moist near the surface. It is best to aerate the soil before the initial watering since it is often compacted to avoid shifting during transit. This also allows it to breathe and release moisture.

Rotate your plant periodically in order to encourage an even growth. Cleaning the leaves regularly will stimulate proper photosynthesis. As you wipe the foliage, inspect the leaves on either side to make sure there are no pests.
