The Nepenthes alata, also called Asian Pitcher Plant, is the most common Nepenthes part of the Nepenthaceae family, native to the Philippines. Rare and much sought for here, it represents a unique visual asset for any luminous space!

The Nepenthes alata’s trap consists of a leaf which, as it grows, curves, flattens out, widens and swells to form a pitcher. The latter is topped by a lid, preventing rain from getting inside. The rim is coated with sugar which attracts insects. When the plant detects the insect, it releases an aesthetic… and slowly dissolves the intruder. Fascinating, no?

MAINTENANCE

The Nepenthes alata prefers slightly moist soil. However, the latter should not be soggy for it could result in root rot. In the absence of rain, fill each trap halfway with water to prevent it from drying out. To be happy inside, the Nepenthes alata requires bright indirect light, but should be kept away from direct sun.

When you take possession of your plant, make sure you assess its watering needs. Before you give it a drink the first time, check the soil’s moisture level to verify whether or not it is moist near the surface. It is best to aerate the soil before the initial watering since it is often compacted to avoid shifting during transit. This also allows it to breathe and release moisture.

Rotate your plant periodically in order to encourage an even growth. Cleaning the leaves regularly will stimulate proper photosynthesis. As you wipe the foliage, inspect the leaves on either side to make sure there are no pests.
