The Philodendron selloum (Philodendron bipinnatifidum) is a robust plant native to South America where its foliage can reach up to 5 feet. Indoors, its immense green and carved leaves will give a tropical touch to any room where it is placed.

The Selloum appreciates a humid environment where ambient light is good, even strong. In this case, its watering will require adjustment. It will not evolve well if set in the corner of a room where light is low.

MAINTENANCE

Selloums are epiphytes plants with aerial roots. Therefore, they react to overwatering. If the soil is too soggy, the leaves may rot. Give your Sellloum a drink when the first third of the pot is dry, which could correspond to a weekly watering depending on the season.

When you take possession of your plant, make sure you assess its watering needs. Before you give it a drink the first time, check the soil’s moisture level to verify whether or not it is moist near the surface. It is best to aerate the soil before the initial watering since it is often compacted to avoid shifting during transit. This also allows it to breathe and release moisture.

Rotate your plant periodically in order to encourage an even growth. Cleaning the leaves regularly will stimulate proper photosynthesis. As you wipe the foliage, inspect the leaves on either side to make sure there are no pests.
