Native of the rainforest canopies of Australia and New Guinea, the Schefflera amate is a fast-growing and lush plant. Given its leaf structure, it is also known as Umbrella Tree. Its glossy green leaves will add a tropical touch to any space where it is placed.

The Schefflera amate has adapted well to indoor environments and is tougher than the Ficus in terms of light requirements. It will thrive near an East-facing window, but will not appreciate being set in direct sun in a window facing South or West, which could burn its leaves.

MAINTENANCE

The Schefflera amate appreciates being watered when its soil dries up significantly. Give it a drink when dry at almost half pot, which could correspond to every 7 to 10 days depending on the season and humidity level of the room.

The Schefflera amate can grow up to 8 feet tall indoors. In order to tame its growth and keep it looking bushy, we recommend you prune the new growth tips using a sharp, sterilized blade.

When you take possession of your plant, make sure you assess its watering needs. Before you give it a drink the first time, check the soil’s moisture level to verify whether or not it is moist near the surface. It is best to aerate the soil before the initial watering since it is often compacted to avoid shifting during transit. This also allows it to breathe and release moisture.

Rotate your plant periodically in order to encourage an even growth. Cleaning the leaves regularly will stimulate proper photosynthesis. As you wipe the foliage, inspect the leaves on either side to make sure there are no pests.
