The ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is part of the Aracea family and native to semi-arid regions of Eastern Africa. It has adapted to long periods of dry conditions interspersed with abundant rain. The ZZ has therefore developed a rhizomous root system allowing it to hold on to as much water as possible while providing it with fleshy leaves rich in moisture.

This plant loves to be neglected and is a great choice for people who travel a lot, forget to water their plants or for any office space. Though the Zamioculcas prefers good indirect light, it will also be satisfied if placed in low light or direct sun, which makes it a very versatile and hardy indoor plant.

MAINTENANCE

The ZZ Plant likes to be watered when its soil is completely dry. Given its extremely efficient water retention mechanism, you should only give it a drink when the soil is dry from top to bottom. In a low light environment or during winter, it may require being watered only once a month.

When you take possession of your plant, make sure you assess its watering needs. Before you give it a drink the first time, check the soil’s moisture level to verify whether or not it is moist near the surface. It is best to aerate the soil before the initial watering since it is often compacted to avoid shifting during transit. This also allows it to breathe and release moisture.

Rotate your plant periodically in order to encourage an even growth. Cleaning the leaves regularly will stimulate proper photosynthesis. As you wipe the foliage, inspect the leaves on either side to make sure there are no pests.
