The Schlumbergera is a hybrid cactus native to South-East Brazil. Unlike traditional cacti, it is not prickly and blooms when its cousins go dormant in winter time. The great amount of long-lasting blooms it produces will make any indoor plant lover happy!
Its green stems are brittle, thick, jagged and flat. Its shoots first grow upright, bend and then become limp. But this does not mean your Schlumbergera is not happy. On the contrary! The colour of its blooms may vary. What a surprise it will be for you when it flowers if it is not already the case when you select it! It is the ideal plant to give a tropical feel to your home or office space.
MAINTENANCE
The Schlumbergera needs very bright indirect light to be happy indoors. Ideally, set it near a window, away from any heat source for it prefers a cooler environment. Unlike cacti, it needs to be watered when the soil dries up to the first third of the pot. It only will produce blooms on the previous year’s stems. It is therefore better not to prune it if you wish it to produce abundant blooms.
When you take possession of your plant, make sure you assess its watering needs. Before you give it a drink the first time, check the soil’s moisture level to verify whether or not it is moist near the surface. It is best to aerate the soil before the initial watering since it is often compacted to avoid shifting during transit. This also allows it to breathe and release moisture.
Rotate your plant periodically in order to encourage an even growth. Cleaning the leaves regularly will stimulate proper photosynthesis. As you wipe the foliage, inspect the leaves on either side to make sure there are no pests.
